Certain bands have the ability to ride a groove while bouncing different techniques off of it. What makes their style interesting is as each song is played, something new is brought to the senses. Providence, Rhode Island act Aquaria have a funky and bluesy sound that exemplifies this. There’s nothing cookie cutter about it and the band is more than their principal foundation. Their debut album, Interbeings, is being self-released on April 25 and it shows a band capturing something that’s identifiable.

The album possesses a style that mirrors classic rock from the ’70s. John Clifford has a smooth, soulful voice while riffing on his guitar. Jimmy James on bass and Corey Chabot on drums are the engine that make the rhythms roll. There’s a bit of heaviness in a few songs but there are also a couple that have an acoustic tone. It seems like this trio have a knack for making even the most complex things look easy.

As a person who has been involved in Providence’s music scene for over a decade, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing musicians evolve to the apex of their abilities. Before starting Aquaria, Clifford, James and Chabot were in a junky punk band called The Sweet Release. From seeing that band and seeing what they’re doing now, Aquaria has as much emphasis as the former band did with their intensity. Hopefully that makes sense. Anyways…
