Rob’s Album Of The Week: Hugs Of The Sky’s Virtual Lullaby Circus
Wading through the electronic cesspool that is the internet can be a pain when it comes to finding music that’s both good and new. When the searching comes to fruition, it can bring astounding sounds to the ears. It backs up the fact that you can find a great album from the most unlikely of places. For example, a small city in Belgium called Limbourg and that’s where psychedelic punks Hugs Of The Sky are from. Their third album, Virtual Lullaby Circus, was self-released on August 5 and it’s a fantastic marriage of the abstract and the distorted.
The band has a couple of interesting facts. They’re a result of two bands coming together, which are Hugs and The Insect Soldiers Of The Sky. They’ve also only been around for a year so it’s crazy how they have three albums out already. Their style is very reminiscent of Tropical Fuck Storm and Sonic Youth. There’s definitely an edge to what they have going on and there’s isn’t anything boring about what they’re accomplishing.
One consistent element throughout the album is the amount of fuzz adorning each song. It’s structured noise with extravagant progressions and it has a unique way of captivating the senses.
