Rob’s Album Of The Week: Mogwai’s As The Love Continues
They might not be a household name in the United States, but Glasgow post-rock act Mogwai has been one of the most consistently solid bands of the past 25 years. The quartet of guitarists and bassists Stuart Braithwaite and Dominic Aitchison, drummer Martin Bulloch and multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns continuously evolve their sound in brilliant ways. There’s also a mix of an atmospheric quality with pulsating rhythms that’s purely captivating. Their tenth album, As The Love Continues, that was released on both Rock Action Records and Temporary Residence Limited on February 19th hits hard and conveys a desire to turn up the volume. The mostly instrumental record is ideal for anyone who loves thunderous downbeats and complex structures.
The style of post-rock is a strange one. At times it can be exciting while at other times it can be downright boring. Some bands just have that same reverb tone that neither increases or decreases in pitch, it’s a monotone approach that’s mind-numbing. Mogwai is an exception because of their dedication to artistic growth that’s evident in their new album. For example, using a vocoder in a song and making it sound good is an admirable trait that shouldn’t be ignored.
Everyone on this planet is a hypocrite to some extent, it’s a common flaw we all share and it’s part of what makes us imperfect…
