When people say that everything that’s been done in music has already been done, they’re ignoring jazz’s potential. The entire mission of the musical style is to expand horizons and push boundaries. It’s why it’s such a beautiful artform, nothing stays the same and everything is always progressing. Mastering this approach is Monobody out of Chicago with stunning progressions and rhythms along with a distinct edge. Their third full-length, Comma, that’s due out on April 24 via Sooper Records is fantastically tight knit while touching upon numerous soundscapes.

If independent music enthusiasts don’t know this band off the bat, then they most likely know of drummer Nnamdi Ogbonnaya due to his extensive solo indie pop career. His drumming is incredible on this album and the guitar riffs from Conor Mackey up the intensity to astounding levels. There’s a ton of synth adorning the music courtesy of Mackey and Al Costis with the latter also contributing on bass. Steve Mark lends his talents on bass as well with Collin Clauson completing the sonic arsenal on the keys. These elements combine to make a wonderful record that takes the senses on a variety of journeys.

If you’re new here, then this is the part of the review column where I sound off on something, exude my feelings on an issue, get up on my soapbox or do all three. This time I really don’t know…
