Rob’s Album Of The Week: Mourn’s Self Worth
The characteristics of punk rock are fairly easy to nail down. There’s the amplified guitars, simple chords, rhythmic drums, unbridled energy and infectious angst. In my opinion, there’s another characteristic to include and that’s artistic freedom. Barcelona’s Mourn embraces this in excellent fashion with emphatic harmonies, progressive melodies and a structure that isn’t grounded to a specific formula. Their fourth LP, Self Worth, that came out via Captured Tracks on October 30 exemplifies a brilliant approach that gives a righteous hit to the senses.
It can be said that this album is an example of coming of age for the band. There’s an underlying theme of young adults growing older while dealing with an unfriendly world. Musically this nails that down with aggressive tones and vocals screaming into the void that most of us feel fairly often. Both guitarists and vocalists Jazz Rodríguez Bueno and Carla Pérez Vaz give off those emphatic harmonies I previously mentioned. Jazz’s sister Leia on bass and Victor Álvarez Rida on drums are the impenetrable foundation that keep up the pace while being the engineers of the band’s vitality. Self Worth is a record that inspires and empowers, you’ll definitely want to start moving around once you start listening.
How about Election Day 2020, huh? As of press time, we still don’t know who the next…
