Rob’s Album Of The Week: Narrow Head’s 12th House Rock

Houston rock act Narrow Head have a knack for capturing the grungy, shoegazey sounds of the ’90s and bringing them into the present day. They achieve this without ripping anyone off or being a cookie cutter interpretation. It’s a fresh take on a decades-old style adorned with heavy riffs and pulsating rhythms. Their second full-length, 12th House Rock, that was released via Run For Cover Records on August 28 continues this approach in excellent fashion. There’s a lot of emotive intensity that’s exhibited within that album that captivates the senses.

Within the emphatic amplification, vocalist and guitarist Jacob Duarte sheds his inhibitions and sings about dealing with drugs and isolation. It’s real and honest without any hollow nonsense. Musically, if you’re a fan of Deftones and My Bloody Valentine then you’re gonna love these guys. It’s a perfect melding of heavy, sonic rock with primed feedback and distortion. The tones that come from the band are excellent as they capture an organic darkness with full force.

There’s a lot of negativity floating around the world these days. The societal division among us is the biggest it’s been in over a century and we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. I could go on and on, but what would I be accomplishing if I did? Instead, I’d like to shed light on the ones who have been helping…
