Rob’s Album Of The Week: Psychic Graveyard’s A Bluebird Vacation
Noise rock is a complex style that has an abundance of variables coming into play. Encompassing harsh tones are thunderous breakdowns, spine-tingling progressions and an overall weirdness. These elements flow within an avant-garde structure while giving the senses an audial bombardment. Based both in San Diego and Providence, Psychic Graveyard harnesses all of this in their debut LP, A Bluebird Vacation, that came out on May 22 via the Los Angeles based label Deathbomb Arc. It’s album that has a ton of clashing and thrashing going on while oozing sheer electricity.
Now, you’re probably thinking how one band can hail from two cities. Well, that’s because vocalist Eric Paul and guitarist Paul Viera are both from Providence while drummer Charles Ovett and guitarist Nathan Joyner hail from San Diego. The funny thing about this album is how it hardly includes any guitars at all. This quartet gets experimental by using fireworks, field recordings and other non-traditional instruments to make crazy sounds. It also shows an expansion of talents in unconventional ways.
