Rob’s Album Of The Week: *Repeat Repeat’s Glazed
Even though it’s a fact, Nashville being the home of country music also brings out some ridiculous stereotypes. You have urban cowboys that talk with a drawl while uttering words like “pardner” and “yonder” even though they grew up nowhere near the south. There’s also the mainstream churning out meaningless songs about getting drunk, driving a truck and misogynistic takes. It sucks, but there’s also another side to Nashville’s music scene that’s more independent and underground. Garage pop duo *Repeat Repeat are part of that community and their second album, Glazed, that came out via Dangerbird Records on May 31 is excellent.
Husband and wife Jared and Kristyn Corder have unique harmonies to go along with an upbeat vibe. There’s also a clash between raw guitar riffs and gleaming synth that has an interesting dynamic. Nothing is too polished, but there’s enough of it to give it some quirky accessibility. That could be courtesy of Patrick Carney from The Black Keys on production, but you’d probably have to ask the band yourself. Glazed is an album that takes awkwardness and makes it melodic.
While listening to *Repeat Repeat, I keep getting thoughts about bands like Beat Happening and Harvey Danger in my head. It’s not a definite melding of those two sounds, but it’s awfully close. There’s something else that’s present but I can’t put my…
