Rob’s Album Of The Week: Thanya Iyer’s Kind
Pop music doesn’t have to be cookie cutter beats and catchy lyrics. Despite what the mainstream will portray it as, that particular style has a lot more potential and room for growth than people give it credit for. Pop can also include orchestral variations while delving from the singer-songwriter aesthetic. Montréal’s Thanya Iyer nails this approach with her second LP, Kind, that was released on July 31 via Topshelf Records. It’s the type of album that takes the mind to a different world while immersing it in lyrics and tones.
The world Iyer creates in this album is abundant with nature. While listening, the senses envision a landscape of vibrant colors and everything existing in perfect harmony. It’s an inventive take on dream pop where it all comes seamlessly and the entire audial experience has a steady flow. There’s a unique cohesiveness, all of the songs go together perfectly. At the same time, each note and melody further develops Iyer’s vision after you press play.
We live in a crazy, messed up world. Just read or watch the news for a few minutes and you’ll see how far we’ve fallen off. People can point fingers but I think the entirety of it all is to blame rather than one singular group or person.
