Rob’s Album Of The Week: The Budos Band’s Long In The Tooth
Music is awesome when it creates a bridge between two styles. The timeless and the modern meet with all sorts of sounds blending in between. The Budos Band from Staten Island are pulling this off with funk and having the artform enter some darker tones. It gives their instrumental music a distinct edge while creating jazzy grooves. Overall, it’s purely magnificent and that’s a great way to describe the band’s sixth release, Long In The Tooth, that was released via the legendary Daptone Records on October 9.
There’s a definitive spaghetti western vibe within the album that’s extraordinary. It gives me visions of The Man With No Name from the acclaimed Dollars Trilogy getting ready for a gunfight. It’s also crazy how The Budos Band is a nonet with their nine members. Jared Tankel plays the baritone sax while Andrew Greene makes his presence known on the trumpet and Dame Rodriguez handles the percussion. There’s also John Carbonella Jr. on the congas, Rob Lombardo on the bongos, Brian Profilio on drums, Mike Deller on the organ and Daniel Foder on bass. With Tom Brenneck rounding out the lineup on electric guitar, these talented musicians create incredible sounds that can’t be denied.
