Rob’s Album Of The Week: The Dirty Nil’s Fuck Art

It might be a meat and potatoes kind of approach, but a genuine rock & roll band has the potential to be a refreshing thing. In an age where there are a ridiculous amount of genres and subgenres in music, the simplistic style that depends on a raucous riff can be exactly what the listener needs. There isn’t any filler, just sheer amplification to energize the senses. Roaring out of Hamilton, Ontario, The Dirty Nil have been embracing this attitude for 15 years. Their third album, Fuck Art, that came out via Dine Alone Records on New Year’s Day adds a bit of flair to an original sound that hits hard.

The trio of guitarist & vocalist Luke Bentham, bassist Ross Miller and drummer Kyle Fisher exhibit musical growth in the new album. They have more triumphant harmonies this time around while maintaining the rawness of their previous releases. It seems to be more of a personal record with the lyrical content revolving around relationships, sobriety, theft and family life. There’s also some party anthems that anyone can relate to with the songs painting a picture rather than spewing nonsense. That’s definitely an understated quality within Fuck Art, there’s a lot of storytelling that goes into the songwriting and that’s a rare thing within rock these days.
