Rob’s Album Of The Week: The Quins’ The Woods Look Good
It’s always a treasure to see how a talented band or musician evolves with their craft. They often incorporate different dimensions with each song while maintaining the core of what got them started. East Bridgewater, MA alternative rock act The Quins have done just that ever since the release of their debut, A Tale Of Love And Evil, that came out back in November of 2014. The past five years has seen them go from a funky blues sound to a more soulful vibe abundant with harmony. Their third installment, The Woods Look Good, that was self-released on October 26 is the latest result.
One quality that immediately grabs hold of the ears is the riffs and solos that come from James “Quincy” Medaglia & Robbie Sturtevant’s guitars. Their skills are impeccable and their alternating lead vocals add a bit of variety. Donnie Hayes on bass is the low end in various ways due to backing up both the rhythms and singing. Drummer Dave Petti plays expansively with beats all over the place. The dynamics that arise when this quartet gets together is something special.
There are so many jewels in New England’s music scene that it would be difficult to put them all on one crown. Maybe one crown for each state to make it easier? Wouldn’t that be a bit of gatekeeping though? That never helped anyone. Art of any kind is never meant to be a…
