Rob’s Album Of The Week: The Rupert Selection’s Priors
The Rupert Selection from Boston are taking prog rock to new levels. Vocalist and guitarist Reilly Somach conveys impeccable skill to heighten the senses. To go along with that, there are tightly syncopated rhythms coming from multi-instrumentalist Peter Crofton and drummer Zak Brown. All of this is evident within their debut full-length, Priors, that came out on June 22 via the label AR Classic Records. It’s amplified music that finds a groove, takes hold of it and turns it into something greater.
What makes an album purely awesome is when each track takes the ears to a different place. It can either be in a sonic way or from how everything sounds in terms of tone. Priors pulls this off with each song being different than the others. One can have Somach shredding an incredible solo while another can have a piano or additional vocals making their presence felt. The result is an unrivaled listening experience that becomes contagious.
For anyone who knows me well, they know that I have an affinity for prog and math rock. I love the unexpectedness of it during the first listen along with how a jam can literally be all over the place. The dimensional aspect of music is highlighted within this style and that’s why I love it so much. That’s also why I’m writing about The Rupert Selection’s new album. To back up my reasoning, here…
