Rob’s Album Of The Week: Vundabar’s Either Light

Boston indie rock act Vundabar are incredibly consistent. They maintain this jangly guitar vibe while creating in a spectrum where one end is laid back slacker rock and the other end is rhythmic weirdo powerpop. They accomplish this while avoiding trends and staying true to what they do. It results in a sound that’s similar to The Cars and the Talking Heads but without the electronic elements. This is all evident within their fourth album, Either Light, that came out on March 13 via the band’s own label Gawk Records.

The nucleus of the band comes from the duo of Brandon Hagen on guitar and vocals and Drew McDonald on drums. Hagen also plays piano, keyboard, synth and vibraphone on the record. They’re joined by Zackery Abramo on bass and Emily Massey on backing vocals. Patrick Hyland from the New York based project studio Immediate Disintegration handled the production side of things and the quality is excellent. This assortment of talents coming together just makes Either Light that much better.
